President Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel committee said they wanted to support Mr Obama's approach

US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.

Mr Obama - woken up with the news early on Friday - said in an address at the White House that he was "surprised and deeply humbled" by the award.

He said he did not feel he deserved to be in the company of some of the "transformative figures" who had previously received the award.

Speaking outside the White House, he said he would accept the prize as a "call to action".

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's peace prize. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia had been among the favourites.

Instead the committee chose Mr Obama, who was inaugurated less than two weeks before the 1 February nomination deadline.

There was widespread surprise at the committee's decision. While world leaders were largely supportive of the award, thousands of people have contacted the BBC with more sceptical views.

An estimated 75% of comment sent to the BBC expressed surprise at the award. Some said awarding the prize to Mr Obama was plain wrong, others that the decision had come too soon, before he had made any concrete foreign policy achievement.

ANALYSIS
The award is certainly unexpected and might be regarded as more of an encouragement for intentions than a reward for achievements.

After all, the president has been in office for a little over eight months and he might hope to serve eight years. His ambition for a world free of nuclear weapons is one that is easier to declare than to achieve and a climate control agreement has yet to be reached.

Indeed, the citation indicates that it is President Obama's world view that attracted the Nobel committee - that diplomacy should be founded "on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population".

The Nobel laureate - chosen by a five-member committee - wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m).

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said in a statement.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said.

He specifically mentioned Mr Obama's work to strengthen international institutions and work towards a world free of nuclear arms.

'New climate'

Reaction to the committee's decision from around the world was swift and varied.

MARDELL'S AMERICA
There was already a huge weight of responsibility on Obama's shoulders, and this medal hung round his neck has just made it a little heavier

Mark Mardell
BBC North America editor

Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, said he could not think of anyone more deserving of the award.

"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself," Mr ElBaradei said.

At the other end of the spectrum, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the Reuters news agency the award was ridiculous.

"The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won the 'Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians'," he said.

Since taking office in January, President Obama has pursued an ambitious international agenda including a push for peace in the Middle East and negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.

THE SELECTION PROCESS
Those qualified to nominate candidates include members of national governments, international judiciary, academics and previous prize winners
Five Norwegians are chosen by Norway's parliament to sit on the Nobel Committee
The committee compiles a shortlist of between five and 20 candidates
The shortlist is considered by the Nobel Institute's permanent advisers, mainly Norwegian academics
The Nobel Committee chooses the winner
Details of the nominations and selection process are kept secret for 50 years

But critics say he has failed to make breakthroughs. Domestically, Mr Obama has been working to tackle an economic crisis and win support for healthcare reform.

Some said they saw the prize as a way of encouraging the US leader early in his presidency.

"It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama's message of hope," said Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, a former winner.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the award confirmed "America's return to the hearts of the people of the world".

The statement from the Nobel Committee said Mr Obama had "created a new climate in international politics".

"Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," it said.

The committee added that the US was now playing a more constructive role in meeting "the great climatic challenges" facing the world, and that democracy and human rights would be strengthened.

Mr Obama is the first US president to win the prize since former US President Jimmy Carter in 2002. Former vice-president Al Gore shared the prize in 2007.

Among earlier US leaders, Theodore Roosevelt won the prize in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won it in 1919.

The Nobel prize was invented by the Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel, and was first awarded in 1901.

He designated the parliament in Norway, which at the time was united with Sweden, to elect the peace prize committee. Swedish academies are responsible for other prizes.

The prize-giving ceremony for the peace award is due to take place on 10 December in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

US President Barack Obama has said he was "surprised and deeply humbled" to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, less than 10 months into his presidency.

Speaking at the White House hours after the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee named him as a surprise winner, he said the award should be a "call to action".

The world faced challenges that "cannot be met by one person or by one nation alone," Mr Obama said.

The committee said he won for efforts to boost diplomacy and co-operation.

REFLECTIONS : :

By: Viki@DirectoryOfus.com

President Barack Obama so far has impressed his worst critics. The first 10 months in office, in my opinion have been ok. On the International aspect is even better! That's why he has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. In my humble opinion, he's producing solutions to a monster of issues from the Stimulus Package to Empower Economy, Healthcare, Education, Foreign affairs & a website where the American People can follow the way the money is being spent.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be carried out with full transparency and accountability -- and Recovery.gov is the centerpiece of that effort. In a short video, President Obama describes the site and talks about how you'll be able to track the Recovery Act's progress every step of the way.

Recovery.gov is a website that let us, the taxpayers, figure out where the money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is going. There are going to be a few different ways to search for information. The money is being distributed by Federal agencies, and soon we'll be able to see where it's going -- to which states, to which congressional districts, even to which Federal contractors. As soon as they are able to, they'll display that information visually in maps, charts, and graphics.

For more info go to: http://www.recovery.gov/

To a Promise to End the Iraq's war by the end of August 2010. He's pushing the Government's Leaders to work like Never Before! That's the only way: CHANGE will happen! I've seen President Obama humbly inviting the American People to contribute by putting their two cents in our communities! Wherever You Are! There You Are! Roll up your Sleeves and DO Something for your country! To reach Greatness Together! I guess he's right... I agreed what he's doing is a different approach that reaches masses and touches hearts around the world... He's touched mine...

I hope President Obama, promotes our website like We're Promoting his, =) anyway; The Website he's promoting is at: http://www.usaservice.org

In our technologically advanced world of constant fast pace and “time is money” mentality, when it comes to much needed rest and relaxation, we want it all at once, a place that has everything right under our fingertips and where the fun never stops.  Although, such places are difficult to find, there is a precious gem tucked away on the shores of Lake Geneva in a small town of Fontana, Wisconsin, the Abbey Resort and Spa.

Not only is the Abbey Resort and Spa a top-notch full-service luxurious resort, but also a place of fun, sanctuary, peace, and even meditation.  Settled on 90 acres of magnificent natural beauty, the resort features 334 guestrooms and 13 suites, all with a feeling of a lake cottage.  The accommodations range from deluxe guest rooms, resort or pool view suites, harbor view suites and the Abbey villas all adorned with luxurious furnishings.

Another absolute delight of the Abbey Resort and Spa is the AVANI Spa.  Featuring 35,000 square foot facility, guests can enjoy a day full of soothing healing and relaxation to the max.  With 17 private treatment rooms, dry sauna, whirlpools, steam rooms, inhalation room, lounge areas, outdoor sundeck, atrium pool with lap lanes and a full service salon, you cannot go wrong by coming to this sanctuary.  I personally had the absolute pleasure of experiencing a full-body relaxation massage and can honestly say that the experience was unforgettable.

The Abbey Resort and Spa in Fontana, Wisconsin is not just a full-service luxury resort, it is a magical place filled with beautiful surroundings, luxurious accommodations, delicious food, wonderful entertainment, relaxing spa, and most of all, exceptional service.  If you want it all in one place, the Abbey Resort and Spa is just for you.  The only thing to bring is your loved ones and everything else will be at ken care of.  I cannot imagine a more fun-filled getaway than at the Abbey Resort and Spa in Fontana, Wisconsin.

"TRANQUIL GETAWAY"

By Viki@DirectoryOfUS.com

Vacation getaways are one of the best small pleasures of life.  People travel all over the United States for a much-needed rest and relaxation any time of the year.  When I embarked on one of these little treasures, I ended up in the Door County Peninsula, Wisconsin in a small village of Sister Bay right on the shores of Green Bay.  The village of Sister Bay is full of small town charm and natural beauty with sparkling water, small shops and restaurants, and most importantly, a heart full of friendly people and ready smiles.

My quest in Sister Bay took me to a very beautiful and picturesque place called the Birchwood Lodge.  Sitting on top of a hill on five acres of greenery is a 46-room lodge, each including a big deck, two-person Jacuzzi, a fireplace and a kitchen or kitchenette.  The Premiere suite I had the pleasure of staying in was very comfortable with a king-size bed, a large Jacuzzi tub, a burning fireplace, a pull-out sofa, a dining area with a table and chairs, a very convenient kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, all the dishes and utensils, and the best feature of all, a comfortable big deck with wooden chairs and a green view where you feel that all your cares are melting away and there is nothing left but peace and tranquility.  Other lodging options include the Premiere Deluxe Suites, Grand one-bedroom suite, Grand two-bedroom suite, Village Homes and a historic renovated farmhouse.

The choice of amenities and things to do are enough to pick from at the Birchwood Lodge which boasts 2 heated swimming pools, outdoor and indoor, whirlpool and hot sauna for everyone's enjoyment.  Adjacent to the pool are the tennis courts for the sports-minded individuals.  Also available is the game room with DVD/VCR rentals, business center, two large conference rooms, laundry facility, gas grills for outdoor cooking, TV relaxation area with a small library and bicycle rental.

If all these amenities are still not enough to satisfy the guests, a short walk away is a charming public beach with warm bay water and shops and restaurants.  A short drive away are the adjacent villages of Ephraim and Fish Creek where the small town charm is evident in all the historic architecture of the buildings and small shops and restaurants.  I would recommend the fish boil experience, a unique tradition known only at Door County.

My experience at the Birchwood Lodge left very pleasant and fulfilling memories.  I would recommend for anyone who wants peace and tranquility combined with style and elegance to come stay at the warm inviting Birchwood Lodge.  The memories of your getaway will surely last you for years to come.

The Making of "PUBLIC ENEMIES" Johnny Depp "as John Dillinger.

(View original pictures & video... click here!..)

Crown Point, IN, The people of Crown Point, Indiana, can not believe that a Super Star, Johnny Depp is in town!

I went to Walgreen's to buy some supplies and the cashier gave me some inside information, like the exact place of the filming, the hotel where film's crew were staying, including Johnny Depp & other interesting info. Small town, you know...

I was really excited to see Johnny Depp, "as John Dillinger", breaking from the local jail, even though I already worked with him on the film, Don Juan D'Marco, where I spent a couple of month of excitement between Los Angeles, California and Hawaii. Johnny Depp was a real cool guy then, even though he wasn't as nearly famous as he is today, but we used to hang out on the beach with Mr. Marlon Brando & Faye D. (mean lady)...

Anyway, my wife and I drove from Chicago to Crown Point to visit a friend that happens to be one of the Producers for Public Enemies. I worked with him on a film called "Heat" starring, Al Paccino, Robert D'niro, Val Kilmer & Ali. I haven't seen this guy for like a few years, and I was happy that he recognized me after all this years, he's a real cool guy that invites me in the set to hang out all the time during filmings.

On the Fan's area, we met amazing people/J.D's Fans; starting with "Hardcore Fans" like Maggie and Maria that reserved their spots since the night before at 11pm it was 4pm when we met them! It was cold during the day, I can't even imagine what they went through to reserve those spots that very nicely shared with me and my wife including their portable lazy chairs, hot chocolate, blankets, food, cigarettes and stories. We also met each other's Mom's that happen to be also J.D's hardcore fans and happen to be sisters so Maggie and Maria are cousins from Crown Point, IN.

A Violinist in the Metro

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

Finding Your Note  (Steve Goodier)

A short story by William Saroyan is titled "The Man Whose Wife's Hair Was Too Long But Whose Understanding of Music Was Too Short." If you think the title strange, listen to this:

In the story, a husband plays the cello and never changes notes. He just continues to repeat the same note without variation.

His wife is driven to distraction and finally protests: "Why do you play the same note over and over and over again? Other cellists play different notes."

"Other cellists play different notes," her husband replies, "because they are trying to find the right one. I've found mine."

Ahhh, the beauty of finding your note! I think I could like him. Finding your note is something like finding your purpose in life or landing where you need to be.

Philosopher James Allen advised, "Above all be of single aim; have a legitimate and useful purpose, and devote yourself unreservedly to it." He could have said, "Find your note and stay with it."

I believe that is an important part of being happy. Like Helen Keller says, true happiness is attained "through fidelity to a worthy purpose."

In music, staking your claim on one note will drive everyone around you nuts. But finding the right note in life, and giving yourself to it, can be a source of unending joy.

On the Winter Solstice of 2012 at exactly 11:11 UT a trans-dimensional event will open a cosmic portal in Sedona Arizona and a leap of faith - from the top of Bell Rock - will propel me through its opening. --PAG

END-DATE or END of CYCLE

Are you aware that a Shift in human consciousness is occurring even as you read these words that employs celestial triggers such as supernovas and Earth’s alignment with Galactic Center in the years leading up to 2012 to trigger the evolution of our species? --Sol Luckman

Let's now focus on what it is about the Winter Solstice of 2012 that makes it special - by initially eliminating that which is inaccurate. First and foremost the Mayan calendar does not end on 12-21-2012. The calendar continues though - according to most Mayan scholars - one cycle ends and another begins around this time. Also, 2012 is not the only significant year with respect to the galactic alignment so aptly described by John Major Jenkins.

"We have to remember that the ancient Maya skywatchers were looking forward some 2,000 years. They knew that the solstice sun was drawing closer to the dark rift and the Milky Way, into the Great Mother womb (the galactic center). They created an entire cosmology around this, including a prophecy and spiritual teachings. They had an insight that this kind of alignment was something worthy of being called a World Age transition, the end /beginning nexus of a great cycle (the precessional cycle).   I believe this is an insight into true energy dynamics that effect seasons of change on the planet. It's a very slow process and I doubt there is much different, in terms of alignment dynamics, between 1980, 1987, 1999, 2004, or 2015. There may be other trigger points according to astrological theory. Certainly 2012 is going to carry an expectational punch. My interest is in reconstructing the spiritual, cosmology, and mythological dimensions of the original cosmology put in place by the inventors of the Long Count at Izapa.

"The modern calculation of the precise galactic alignment, using precise astronomical terminology, is 1998. We may believe that the Maya were 14 years off in their calculation, and this is apparently true, according to precision we have the luxury to access. But it doesn't mean that the Maya did not intend the placement of their cycle ending date to target this rare alignment. And yes, there is way way way too much hoopla being made over something that will 'happen' in 2012. However, I highly doubt that the solstice 2012 placement of the 13-Baktun cycle ending was NOT intended to point to the alignment - the connections between the astronomical features involved in the alignment and the astro-theology embedded in the Creation Myth, the ballgame, king-making rites, and the carved monuments at Izapa make the case very clear. I don't believe the Maya would have been able to drill into the precise minute of the solstice in 2012 according to what we call Greenwich Mean Time."  --John Major Jenkins (April, 2008)

Mayan Cosmogenesis: Cosmic Mother Gives Birth

The Long Count end date on December  21st,  2012  A.D. highlights an astronomical alignment determined by precession. The  alignment occurs when the winter solstice sun conjuncts the crossing point of Milky Way and ecliptic in Sagittarius.

http://edj.net/mc2012/fap2.html

As you can see, the alignment involving the Winter Solstice Sun and the dark rift - actually began on or about the WS of 1980 and will continue each WS until 2016. Further, the WS of 2012 isn't even the center point of that 36-year period but is close to the end. So why does the Mayan calendar specifically point to 2012 as the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next when - at least in this time period - it has no greater significance than the other 35 WS's. And though one has to admit that the symbolism surrounding the dark rift is quite relevant to what will be occurring - it is not the galactic alignment that the Maya are pointing us to. It is something that will be occurring within that time period - something much more significant.

Assuming for the purpose of argument that the majority of experts are accurate in proclaiming that 13.000 bactum accurately converts to December 21, 2012 - why did the Maya select that signpost and ignore the beginning, center and end of the alignment and cosmic recycling point?

Regardless of whether precisely converted, the Winter Solstice of 2012 is now part of our collective consciousness - originating at various times and from various sources.  Thus I suggest that it is not about the galactic alignment but instead refers to an event that will be manifesting during that point of time and space? I refer to that point as the cosmic coordinate and the event as trans-dimensional - if only for an inability to describe what is incomprehensible.

COUNTDOWN to 2012: THE MAYAN MESSAGE

If you want to hear an excellent ten-minute summary of what to expect in 2012 be sure to check out Art's conversation with Graham Hancock. Regardless of whether the "ascension" is for the masses or a select few - when that portal opens - I will be ready. Will you be?

1) Why 2012?

December 2012 the End of the Mayan Calendar and the start of something new. Coast to Coast interview with Art Bell and Graham Hancock

2) Mayan Prophecy 2012: Entering Our Galactic Day

Based on their observations, the Mayans predicted that from the initial date of the start of their civilization, 4 Ahau, 8 Cumku which is 3113 B.C., after one cycle being completed 5,125 years in their future, December 21st, 2012. The Sun, having received a powerful ray of synchronizing light from the center of the galaxy, would change its polarity which would produce a great cosmic event that would propel human kind to be ready to cross into a new era, The Golden Age. It is after this, that the Mayans say we will be ready to go through the door that was left by them, transforming our civilization based on fear to a vibration much higher in harmony.

3) 2012 & The Kali Yuga

That said it is wise to perhaps disregard the position which suggests suddenly every person on Earth will automatically become fully enlightened spiritual beings, ready to embrace a world of spiritual concerns, peace and compassion. It is self evident that the last time a Great Year period ended we did not have this happen, nor in prior cycles. The fact is that we are still here and not fully self realised, so we know it does not tend to happen that way. Whether perhaps some certain persons were especially effected or did somehow ascend to a higher dimension remains possible, but as stated that’s not everyone on Earth.

COUNTDOWN to 2012: THE SHIFT

Below are three superb commentaries about what we might expect to experience in the next 4+ years leading into the cosmic coordinate. If a stargate does open on the Winter Solstice of 2012 - I plan to shift right through it. Apparently this galaxy is shifting into a very special alignment - one that signals the arrival of a cyclical trans-dimensional event.

1) Timewave 2013

What lies ahead for the human race? Will we reach the destiny that awaits us?

http://www.disclose.tv/action/viewvideo/3193/Trailer__Timewave_2013_by_Sharron_Rose/

2) Old Struggles on a New Earth

The shift of '2012' could mean that Eastern mysticism, the earth-based shamanism of tribal people and the West’s pursuit of philosophical and scientific knowledge about the world come together to create a new form of consciousness.

http://commongroundmag.com/2008/03/pinchbeck0803.html

3) The Sprint to 2012

The astrology of 2008 puts us onto the final approach to 2012. Turn on your radar, buckle up, chuck the ginger ale, and drop your landing gear: the Age of Technology is approaching the runway.
